Based on the 1950 novel of the same name by Henry Morton Robinson, detailing the life of a young American priest who must face numerous moral dilemmas, the rise of Nazis, and growing bigotry while he rises into power within the church. The story is based in part on the career of Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman, archbishop of New York (1939–1967).
