Väinö [Wäinö] Aaltonen: 1915-1925

Porvoo: Werner Söderström, 1925. Hardcover. First Finnish Edition, preceding all others. Text in Finnish and French. The first monograph on Wäinö (or Väinö) Aaltonen, with 35 black-and-white plates reproducing his work.

Included is a Typed Letter Signed from the artist, affixed to the book's front endpaper, dated December 3, 1927, enclosing the book and an envelope of 16 black-and-white photographs of his work.

Aaltonen was a Finnish sculptor active during the early 20th century. He is today best remembered for his large-scale sculptures of Finnish figures, including Paavo Nurmi and Jean Sibelius.

Book: Poor, with no dust jacket, with text block detached from the binding, boards moderately faded, and rear board bent at the bottom left corner. Bookplate of the book's recipient, Mildred Bliss, affixed to the front pastedown.

Photographs: Varying in size from 3.5 x 5.25 inches to 7 x 9.5 inches. Generally Near Fine to Fine. Housed in a manila envelope with the address of Bliss in manuscript ink on the front.
