In 1991, shortly before his literary career took off, Grisham took the case of a lawsuit filed by widow Barbara King against the Illinois Central Railroad, for the wrongful death of her husband, John Wayne King, a railroad brakeman who was crushed between two rail carriages. The much publicized trial took place in the Lincoln County rail town of Brookhaven in 1996, and Grisham, despite his success as a writer, remained committed to the case, and won his first trial as an attorney in seven years, with the jury returning a judgment of over a half million dollars for his client.
