The King of the Rainy Country
New York: Harper and Row, 1966. First Edition. Presentation Copy belonging to mystery writer Frederic Dannay (better known as one half of Ellery Queen), given to Dannay from Freeling by way of fellow writer and editor Joan Kahn. INSCRIBED to Dannay in 1967 by Freeling on the half-title page: "With sincere good wishes / Nicolas Freeling / New York April '67."
Brief note from Kahn paper-clipped to the front endpaper, executed on a calling card and stating, "Nicolas Freeling thought you might like to have this. He's an admirer and was so pleased to meet you." Additionally laid in with the book is a longer Typed Letter Signed on Harper and Row letterhead, from Kahn to Dannay, dated May 16, 1967, thanking Dannay for a letter and providing Freeling's address in France. A charming trail of associations.
The sixth book in the Van der Valk series, winner of the 1966 Edgar Award for Best Novel.
