Three original photographs of Martha Gellhorn, 1941-1946
N.p. N.p., 1941-1946. Three vintage photographs of celebrated American war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, dating between 1941 and 1946. Includes two publicity photographs issued to promote Gellhorn's 1941 story collection "The Heart of Another," and one press photograph of Gellhorn arriving on a Pan-Am flight from London. Date stamps and mimeo snipes on the versos.
The Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism was established in 1999, and in 2007 the US Postal Service honored Gellhorn in a first-class rate postage stamp, among four other twentieth-century journalists.
Gellhorn was married to Ernest Hemingway in the 1940s, although the couple struggled due to Gellhorn's frequent absences on reporting assignments, and would divorce in 1945. Gellhorn continued to write through the ensuing decades, working for the "Atlantic Monthly" and covering the Vietnam War and the Arab-Israel conflicts in the 1960s and 1970s, and the civil wars in Central America in the 1970s.
