Christie made her breakthrough film appearance in the mid-1960s, in "Billy Liar" (1963), resulting in a contract with producer Nat Cohen. Christie gained international fame on the strength of her performance in John Schlesinger's "Darling" (1965), for which she received an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award. She appeared in what would become her best-known role in the same year, in "Doctor Zhivago" (1965).
