The film documents the "Winter Soldier Investigation," organized by the VVAW, in which more than 125 veterans spoke out about the atrocities they had witnessed and committed in Vietnam. The investigation took place one month after the revelations of the My Lai massacre, in Detroit, January 31 to February 2, 1972. Largely ignored, or greeted with skepticism during its 1972 release, the film was rereleased in theaters to critical acclaim in 2005.
