Based on the 1957 novel by William P. McGivern. Tensions run high when a former cop recruits both a Black nightclub singer and a racist ex-convict to help him rob a bank. Belafonte, who also produced the movie, selected blacklisted screenwriter Abraham Polonsky to write the script, using a pseudonym.
