On an express train to Shanghai, a British captain reconnects with his former lover, now an infamous courtesan—shortly before both are taken hostage by a Chinese warlord. The fourth of seven films directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Dietrich. Based loosely on an incident from 1923 in which a warlord took the entirety of the Shanghai Express hostage, though all were later successfully ransomed. Nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture.
