Based on Olive Higgins Prouty's 1923 novel, about a lower-class woman who forsakes her own happiness so her daughter can rise in society. The first of three adaptations of Prouty's novel, followed by one in 1937, starring Barbara Stanwyck, and one in 1990, starring Bette Midler and John Goodman.
