The announcement of Brando's casting as Mark Antony was met with criticism by the public, who at that time most strongly associated the actor with his role as the boorish Stanley in "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951). Nevertheless, Brando's performance as Antony was widely praised, and even led costar John Gielgud to offer to direct Brando in a London production of "Hamlet" (an offer that Brando ultimately turned down).
