Original portrait photograph of Madge Bellamy
N.p. N.p., Circa 1928. Vintage matte-finish portrait photograph of silent film star and stage actress Madge Bellamy, circa 1928. Stamp of the Manuel Brothers photography studio on the verso.
As with many silent film actors, Bellamy's career faded in the sound era, but virtually ended overnight when the actress was embroiled in an attempted murder case in 1943. Bellamy was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, having shot three times at her former lover, a wealthy lumber executive who married another woman shortly after ending their relationship. The news coverage of the trial brought Bellamy's name into the headlines, but also generated a massive scandal and forced her to permanently retire from acting in 1945.
8 x 10 inches. Strong Near Fine, with some light toning to the bottom right corner on the margin.
