Capote traveled to Venice for the first time in September of 1950, visiting noted art collector and socialite Peggy Guggenheim, with whom he formed a close friendship. The writer would return to Venice several times through the ensuing years, and famously reported that the city "is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go."
