Based on the 1949 novel by Vilhelm Moberg, about a group of poor Swedish farmers who leave Småland and move to Minnesota in hopes of building a new life. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1972, and nominated for four more Academy Awards the following year, including Best Picture and Best Director. Followed by a sequel, "The New Land," in 1972.
