A disparate group of survivors congregate in the Nevada desert after a large-scale attack by aliens, deciding to plan a counterattack in New York City on behalf of the human race. Screenwriters Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich previously worked together on the 1994 film "Stargate," with much of the plot of "Independence Day" conceived by the pair during promotional tours for that movie. Nominated for two Academy Awards, and followed by a 2016 sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence."
Shot on location in New York City, in Flagstaff, Arizona, on the Plains of San Agustin, New Mexico, in Los Angeles and Fontana, California, in Wendover and the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, and in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.
