The Walking Stick

London: Winkast Film Productions, 1969. Archive consisting of a working Rainbow Revision Draft script and two volumes housing 109 original photographs from the 1970 film. All three volumes custom bound, belonging to co-star Samantha Eggar, with her name in gilt to the front boards of each.

Working Draft script with manuscript pencil, ink, and marker annotations on the rectos and versos throughout regarding dialog, motivation, and action (as well as illustrations) by Eggar. Bound in following the script is a diagram by Eggar of the plot development of her character on the verso of an undated typed letter signed from director Eric Till, as well as a Call Sheet dated 21st May 1969.

The 109 original photographs are mounted on the rectos and versos of the leaves of two oversize custom bound volumes, respectively titled "The Walking Stick I / 1969" and "The Walking Stick II / 1969" in gilt on the spine. The 109 original photographs include 75 9.75 x 11.75 inch photographs and 34 7.5 x 9.5 inch photographs, including 65 borderless photographs and 86 matte finish photographs. The photographs include 57 on the set photographs of Eggar, co-star David Hemmings, Till, and other members of the cast and crew, 49 reference photographs, one color studio still photograph, one wardrobe test photograph of Eggar, and one portrait photograph of Eggar.

"The Walking Stick I / 1969" houses 50 9.75 x 11.75 inch matte finish photographs, 18 of which are borderless, and include 49 reference photographs and one wardrobe test photograph of Eggar.

"The Walking Stick II / 1969" houses 59 photographs, 34 7.5 x 9.5 inch photographs and 25 9.75 x 11.75 photographs, 33 are matte finish and 47 are borderless, and include 57 on the set photographs, one color studio still photograph, and one portrait photograph of Eggar. One photograph of Eggar and Till with an inscription by Eggar of "Then I say to him — I love you," and one photograph of Eggar and Till signed by Till with an illegible but excited inscription including three exclamation points.

Based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Winston Graham. Deborah Dainton (Eggar), a polio victim in childhood, is a young woman who uses a walking stick she doesn't really need. She leads a very structured, somewhat reclusive life until she meets a charming, mediocre artist, Leigh Hartley (Hemmings). Hartley's insinuates friendship, then romance, and Dainton feels truly happy for the first time in her life. It is then Hartley reveals he and his friends have a plan to rob diamonds from the auction house she Dainton works, and that nearly everything Hartley had told her about himself has been a lie.

Set in and shot on location in Buckinghamshire and London.

Bound in full white leather, with gilt titles on the spine and front board. Black untitled front wrapper with a die cut window in the British style present. Title page present, dated December 11th, 1968, with credits for author Winston Graham, screenwriter George Bluestone, and Additional Dialogue by Al Lettieri. 131 leaves, with last page of text numbered 115. Xerographic duplication, rectos only, with white, blue, yellow, and goldenrod revision pages throughout, dated variously between 12.11.68 and 6.2.69. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, binding Near Fine.

Two Photograph volumes: 11.5 x 12 inches, 25 leaves and 30 leaves respectively, both bound in full red leather with gilt titles on the spine and front board. Near Fine. Each volume housed in a Near Fine custom red cloth slipcase.
