Captain Kangaroo

New York: CBS Television Network, circa 1971. Original permanent set design drawing imagining a 1971 update for the Captain's quarters and bridge for "Captain Kangaroo," created by Emmy Award-winning artist Gary Smith.

Smith began his career at CBS in 1956, and created this design at the peak of his career there in 1971, by which time he was doing work for specials devoted to Burt Bacharach, Barbra Streisand, and the Tony Awards.

Set design noted as "Capt. Kangaroo Perm. Set" above Smith's autograph, during the period when the show's original setting, "The Treasure House," had been renovated and renamed "The Captain's Place" and the Captain's navy blue coat was replaced with a red one.

From the estate of actor, puppeteer, and television host Chuck McCann, who starred as the recurring character "Sailor Clyde" on the series during the 1960s.

The groundbreaking children's television series aired on CBS on weekday mornings from 1955 to 1985 for over 6000 episodes, the longest running nationally broadcast children's program of its time (later surpassed by "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood"), and was the winner of three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Entertainment.

Created by and starring Bob Keeshan as the Captain (who previously played Clarabell the Clown on "The Howdy Doody Show" from 1947 to 1952). The show's loose structure was built around life in the "Treasure House" (later "The Captain's Place") where the Captain would tell stories, meet guests, present cartoons, and engage in conversation, silly stuntsm and skits with regular characters, both human and puppet, such as Mr. Green Jeans and the psychedelic Dancing Bear.

24 x 20 inches, Ozalid duplication, folded as issued. Near Fine overall, with starting at the center fold and a small chip at the right fold. A well-preserved, lovely example, almost certainly unique.
