For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf

San Lorenzo: Shameless Hussy Press, 1975. First Edition. The scarce first printing of Ntozake Shange's poetic monologues, preceding the hardcover trade edition by two years.

Basis for the Tony Award-nominated 1976 Broadway production, and for the 2022 Broadway revival, also nominated for a Tony Award.

Active from 1969 through 1989, Shameless Hussy was the first feminist press in the United States. The organization was founded by Alta Gerrey in Oakland, and published over 50 titles, most notable among them the early work of authors who would go on to reach mainstream fame, including Susan Griffin, Pat Parker, Mitsuye Yamada, and, of course, Ntosake Shange.

Very Good plus in saddle-stapled wrappers. Annotations in manuscript ink to the front wrapper and title page, correcting the misspelling of Ntozake (changing the S to a Z). Gift inscription to the dedication page, spine lightly faded.
